1. не знать, не понимать -; не уступить, не выполнить и т.п. ни йоты (из чего) [obj]

⇒ (to know, understand etc) nothing at all (about sth.), (to carry out, yield etc) none (of sth.) at all:

- не знать <не понимать и т.п.> ни йоты ≈ not know (understand etc) one iota (of sth.);

- know (understand) not a whit (one iota) (of sth.);

- not know (understand etc) a single thing (the first thing) (about sth.);

|| не уступить{{}}ни йоты ≈ not give an inch;

- not yield in the slightest;

- not yield one iota;

|| не выполнить{{}}ни йоты ≈ not carry out even one iota (of sth.).

     ♦ С одной стороны, он понимал, что не выполнил ни одной йоты из программы, начертанной правителем канцелярии; с другой стороны, ему казалось, что программа эта должна выполниться сама собой, без всякого его содействия (Салтыков-Щедрин 2). He realized, on the one hand, that he had not carried out one iota... of the program his chief secretary had outlined for him, but, on the other, it seemed to him that that program had a good chance of coming off by itself without any interference from him (2a).

2. ни йоты чего нет, не осталось и т.п. [quantif of subj/ gen]

⇒ (there is, there remains etc) absolutely none (of sth.):

- not one (a single) iota (of sth.);

- not a jot (of sth.).

     ♦ Я смотрела "Ярь" - в ней нет ни одной йоты подлинной поэзии, ни одного настоящего слова (Мандельштам 2). I have looked at Yar. There is not one iota of real poetry in it, not a single genuine word (2a).
